This project involves complete renovation of two 1930’s apartment buildings in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle. PUBLIC47 created two new loft units in underutilized basement garage spaces, while collapsing an upstairs corridor and removing a deteriorated exterior fire escape. This simplified building egress and gained rentable area on the upper floors by allowing for the apartments to be enlarged. Existing cove ceilings were preserved, new windows were installed, fire sprinklers were added, and the building received a seismic retrofit. The new kitchens open up to the living spaces and feature built-in benches, eating counters, abundant storage, and new appliances.
