Agnes Lofts

Seattle, Washington
Lead Architect: Kevin Tabari

Agnes Lofts sits comfortably among its gritty, industrial neighbors, yet is clean, modern, and forward-looking. Twenty-four loft-style apartments occupy three double-height floors above a street-level restaurant. Use of the loft typology references the scale of the surrounding warehouses and utilizes a code exception for mezzanines that permits the insertion of an extra level. Interconnection between Agnes Lofts and the adjacent Piston + Ring Building allows for shared parking and elevator access, and offers multiple paths through the site. The height difference between the two buildings permits additional units along the south side of Agnes Lofts with ample access to daylight and views.

“As the emerging dominant type of development in Seattle, this sort of mixed-use urban building is an important part of the city’s sustainability strategy. This example is clean and articulate; of particular note are the organization of the plan, the way the building adds to urban life on the street, and the integration with the existing building. The design deals with the everyday with a great deal of discipline.”
