The Shared Roof project involved a feasibility study for a new prototype for urban living. The upper two floors of loft units re to be owner-occupied by a group of families who plan to develop the property. The residential and commercial rental space on the lower two floors will subsidize the owner’s housing cost. Our design looked to create privacy while also opportunities for shared amenities for the families, who are all friends with kids of similar ages. A roof deck and greenhouse will provide the group with the ability to grow their own food and have a shared eating space. The design also sets aside the single-family lot as a secure playcourt (futsal, pickle ball, basketball) for the kids. At that same level is a Clubhouse with common kitchen and media center for the families to share as well as guest suites for their visitors. The goal is to provide the families with all the amenities (and more) that may otherwise attract them to suburban living. The living spaces are designed to provide ample daylight, double-height spaces and private bedrooms. The units interlock at the upper level, so everyone’s front door is off a shared corridor.
