Baseline House

Bozeman, Montana

This major renovation project, situated on a 10-acre site in Montana, creates a multi-generational family retreat that accommodates up to 16 guests. The design enhances the connection to the surrounding landscape by opening the building to its natural environment, with a focus on seamless indoor-outdoor living. A clear and welcoming entry and porch were created to resolve the previous entry confusion and provide a defined sense of arrival.

At the core of the retreat, a new central gathering space featuring a custom wood roof structure serves as the hub for family activities. This space includes a hearth, kitchen, dining area, living area, and a dedicated game and puzzle nook. Adjacent spaces offer comfortable reading areas and relaxation zones, fostering a warm, inviting atmosphere for different generations to enjoy.

In addition to its focus on functionality and comfort, the retreat was designed with high-performance standards in mind. The building incorporates a robust thermal envelope, efficient building systems, and abundant daylighting to maximize energy efficiency and sustainability. Acoustic privacy was carefully considered to ensure peaceful retreats within larger communal gatherings.

The project promotes a deep connection to its natural setting, offering a sustainable and welcoming retreat for family gatherings.
