The New Hope Technical Institute
Progressive ideas for reconciliation and community building are underway in Rwanda, supported in part by an ambitious education agenda. We have teamed up with Shilshole Development and Rwanda Rise to assist the New Hope Technical Institute with expansion plans for their campus that will include housing, retail space, a multipurpose community space, and a new primary entrance for the campus. Working within the local building culture, our design links the new and existing property, providing spaces that support and showcase the school’s programs, such as masonry, sewing, carpentry, culinary arts, welding, and hair dressing, while establishing an active commercial edge and a new gateway entrance. Adaptable retail spaces, which include a second-foor restaurant for the culinary arts program and a clothing store for the sewing program, offer opportunities for the community and students to interact.
The multipurpose building, located mid-site, features a flexible amphitheater space, covered outdoor space, and a library. This project began with a site visit to Rwanda and is in the early stages of design as funding is organized.
