Middle School Renovation
Eastside Prep
Kirkland, Washington
The existing middle school occupied a building built as a professional office. Classrooms were cramped, daylight was scarce, and circulation was circuitous. The renovation to the existing middle school provides spacious classrooms as well as more breathing room between classrooms for informal gathering between classes. The mansard roof was inverted to provide more spatial relief and large perimeter windows. Two sets of classrooms can be combined by opening a folding whiteboard wall so that the school can have meetings with an entire class year. An existing sky bridge and exterior stair were removed, and the existing courtyard was infilled provide more space, daylight and improved circulation.
