Pete Gross House Renovation

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center

Seattle, Washington

Following on a successful project for housing oncology patients with this client, PUBLIC47 was retained to renovate a ‘90s apartment building with extensive water-intrusion problems into a facility appropriate for housing cancer patients. To cost-effectively address the need for new, healthier mechanical systems, increase the building’s thermal performance, and improve the building interiors, we proposed exploiting the annular space between the new rain-screen cladding system and the existing building. This new layer forms a ‘trench coat’ around the existing building – enclosing the exterior decks, enhancing the patients’ experience during recovery, and transforming the exterior character of the building.
